JAPAN INVENTS NEW FORM OF EUTHANASIA USING GIANT WASPS

Faced with one of the lowest birthrates in the world (1.46 per woman) and enormous public sector debt (239% of GDP), Japan is seriously considering euthanasia as a way to dealing with the problems caused by its ageing population, such as soaring pension and medical costs. Some advocates have been pushing hard for what is called a "natural death."

Now it looks like the Japanese have hit upon the perfect solution, and one that is completely "natural," after an 87-year-old Japanese woman in a wheelchair was stung to death by giant wasps. 

As reported by Arab News:

"A swarm of hornets swooped on Chieko Kikuchi as she was on her way back from her care center in western Japan, accompanied by a helper. The helper called firefighters but they could not reach the woman immediately as the swarm around her was too thick and they had no protective equipment. After the ordeal, which lasted around 50 minutes, the woman was rushed to hospital but died the following day, the firefighter said."

Obviously, the important thing here is to pretend it was just an unfortunate accident as that spares everyone's feelings, and everybody hates wasps already. But it is clear that the "helper" and the wasps were working in tandem, as the woman was obviously just left there when she could have been wheeled to safety (and ever increasing health care costs). 

It is not known why the firefighters had to be in attendance, unless it was to stop some misguided member of the public setting fire to the wasps's nest or using smoke to calm them. As with bees, smoke has a calming effect on wasps by hindering their sense of smell and thus cutting off alarm signals generated by pheromones secreted by other wasps.

Every year up to 20 people die in Japan from wasp attacks. Now that it has been proved to work as an effective means of euthanasia we expect that number to soar in the years ahead.
