Sudan: Is There a New Chapter in the Era of Horn Africa?

By Yosief Abraham Z

Despite recent blows on North Sudan’s realizations in possible transition from ‘cold’ to ‘warm’ political eminency, reports still warns of ‘too early’ on such conclusion. Taking multi-folded factors for consideration, political analysts’ stated Sudanese probability for remaining challenged in the fields of human rights, peace processes for the unity of the country and phasing-out pragmatic strategies have been intact.

By asserting that Sudanese government recent trends in economic and diplomatic arenas have still their own hidden corners, the experts articulate ‘flattering’ for statements that praise the motives as a ‘new chapter in the era of Horn Africa.’ Since Sudan is in the lists of countries that sponsor state terrorism since August 12, 1993, improving relations are hopeful but not easy, adds the reports.

With the yet recalled repercussions of the Darfur and South-Sudanese impacts, how Sudan will respond to the Arab league architected policies with its priorities and global phenomenon is the most tremendous challenges. By remembering that Sudan has cut-off its relations with Iran on January 4 of 2016 in respond to the Saudi-led confrontation, would Sudan maintain its own strength in managing its own affairs raises qualms and suspicions.

It is recalled that President Omar-al Bashir visited Iran in July 2011, a move that angered some Arab countries and, especially, Red Sea sharing countries after two Iranian warships docked in Port Sudan on 8 December 2012, marking the second port call by the Iranian navy in Sudan in five weeks. When Iran again escalated such moves after allowing a pair of Iranian navy vessels stay for two days in late October of 2012, ideological tensions in Horn Africa was at acme point.

Sudanese impulsive policies in the Nile-riparian countries deals with Egypt and Ethiopia, inconsistent policies on neighbor countries immigrants, its erratically modeled stances regarding the security of the Red Sea, among others, armors that it is too rash to conclude recent notions of Sudan are ushering the arrival of new era in Horn Africa.
