Though Ethiopia announced that it has released 528 prisoners last week, reports from Brussels, Belgium, started weighting the guarantee the ex-inmates would have in future, as their cases are only ‘suspended’ not ‘canceled or terminated.’ “If cases are only suspended, based up on judiciary definitions, it is meant there are still possibilities to jeopardize the status of their ‘free’ status,” asserts some of the comments we received.

“As Article 13 of Ethiopia’s constitution cherishes the basic human rights to be interpreted according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and other international instruments adopted by Ethiopia, clarifying on whether the allegations are suspended or terminated is, unflinchingly, claimable,” clarifies the messages.

The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), a multilateral treaty adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 16 December 1966, rules that procedural fairness in law is declared as guaranteed if it is ended with clear clarifications on final jurisdictions. “Proclaiming affairs of suspects as ‘suspended’ versus‘ terminated’ are completely different; the word ‘suspended’ has more room to raise the issue again when you feel due and necessary. To avoid miscalculated sabotages, Ethiopia has to terminate the cases for creative more widely expanded and conducive political scope,” the remarks clarified.

It is recalled that Merara Gudina, leader of the Oromo People's Congress (OPC), a political party representing the Oromo people, is one of the renowned political figures Ethiopia has released in past week.
